UK and Canada Opposes the Return of Russia to the G7

The UK and Canada opposed the return of Russia to the G7, deepening a rift over the desire of US President Donald Trump to enter the group. Mr Trump said on Saturday that he would postpone this month’s G7 meeting until September. The president has said that the “outdated group of countries” of the G7 should be expanded to involve others, including Russia.

Mr Trump informed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday of his decision to invite him to the summit. The White House said making “progress towards convening the G7” with Russia was one of the issues addressed by the leaders during a phone call. The G7 Summit, hosted by the US this year, brings together Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom leaders to discuss cooperation issues. But the invitation of Mr Trump to Mr Putin has attracted the wrath of the United Kingdom and Canada, whose leaders said on Sunday they would not accept Russia’s readmission into the party. Russia-formerly knows as the G8 excluding from the party in 2014 in reaction to its annexation of Crimea.

Earlier, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson ‘s spokesperson said he would veto any plan. It requires Russia to join the party. Unless Russia ends its “violent and destabilizing operation,” the United Kingdom will not accept the readmission of the country to the party, said the spokesman for Mr Johnson.

Neither the stance of the United Kingdom or Canada sidesteps Mr Putin’s presence at the US summit. Representatives of non-G7 countries had previously attended the summits of the party. The participation of Mr Putin may be controversial. The UK has had an acrimonious association with Russia in recent years. In 2018 it blamed for an assault by a nerve agent. It is on a suspected Russian spy in Salisbury, England.

Trump Supports Russia’s Return

Mr Trump has repeatedly expressed his support for Russia’s return to the party. It is amid resistance from other members of the G7.

Mr Trump reiterated that thought by announcing the delay of this year’s G7 summit on Saturday.

South Korean and Australian leaders have expressed interest in participating in the US summit. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week declined the President’s invitation. It is to attend a summit in person. The G7 (or Group of Seven) is an organization consists of the seven advanced economies in the world.

Those countries’ leaders meet at summits annually to discuss global governance issues, such as climate change, security and the economy. The organization describes itself as “a community of ideals,” with equality and human rights. Also, democracy and the rule of law as its main principles, as well as stability and sustainable growth.
