Amid the continued communal violence that has claimed 20 lives in parts of northeast Delhi, Congress leaders will march to Rashtrapati Bhavan to seek normalcy and peace in the nation’s capital. They will also present President Ram Nath Kovind with a memorandum. In a rare press conference, Sonia Gandhi, president of Congress, demanded Home Minister Amit Shah‘s resignation for his failure to curb violence in North East Delhi.
Ms Gandhi asked were Home Secretary Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had been since last Sunday. She said the chief minister must be visible in the areas affected and have constant contact with people.
At the time of such crisis, Ms Gandhi recalled how the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would convene an all-party meeting.
Congress ‘ top leadership debated on the issue at a Wednesday meeting of its working committee, Party reports said. During the meeting, the president of Congress Sonia Gandhi and top leaders such as Manmohan Singh, A.K. Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad, P. Chidambaram and Priyanka Gandhi attended. However, Rahul Gandhi couldn’t attend the meeting as he is outside the country, sources said.
Congress is also against the CAA. It has asked the government to hold it in abeyance or to take it back. Congress adds that it is the major concern among a large section of the population which is the Muslim community. Northeast Delhi’s communal violence intensified on Tuesday. This escalated as police battled to check the rioters running amok on the streets. They burned and looted shops, throwing rocks and attacking people.
