Comedian Carl Reiner Passes Away at the Age of 98

Comedian Carl Reiner, who helped develop The Dick Van Dyke Show and took part in movies such as Ocean’s Eleven, has passed away at the age of 98. The prolific writer, comedian, director, and actor also directed several films such as The Jerk (1979) and All of Me (1984) by Steve Martin. He was Ocean’s Eleven in 2001 and his two sequels as Saul Bloom conman, and with Mel Brooks he had a double act. He died Monday at his home in Beverly Hills from natural causes, his assistant Judy Nagy reported.

Reiner also appeared in movies including The Russians Are Coming and The Russians Are Coming (1966). He was a close friend of fellow sketchwriter Brooks, and with their 2000 Year Old Man routines, the pair found a new audience which spawned books and an animated TV special. Reiner ‘s agent recently shared a photo of the couple together with Reiner ‘s daughter endorsing the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Reiner met Brooks in his 90s, almost every day in Beverly Hills, after both of them lost their wives, and they would sit on Reiner’s sofa watching movies, telling jokes, and remembering a comedy life. During World War Two Reiner began acting in the US army. Fellow writers on Your Show of Shows in the 1950s included Brooks and Neil Simon. Thus, creating a blend of silliness and satire.

He won several Emmys writing and producing the Dick Van Dyke Show, playing temperamental variety. It shows host Alan Brady, character Van Dyke ‘s boss, Rob Petrie. Three decades later, a reprisal of his role as Alan Brady. Also, won Reiner another Emmy for a guest turn on sitcom Mad About You in the 1990s. His credits for the directing included the 1977 comedy movie Oh God! George Burns starring, and more Steve Martin movies including Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid and The Man with Two Brains.

Reiner also performed on Broadway, and wrote several books for children, including many. In his 90s, he was always doing voice roles and had a central role. It is in a documentary about people who will stay busy until their 10th decade. Also, titled If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast.

Stars including William Shatner and Rosanna Arquette pay tributes. He leaves three daughters, artist Annie, artist Lucas, actor and producer Rob Reiner. He is behind the likes of This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me. Also, A Few Good Men and When Harry Met Sally. The 64-year-old Reiner ‘s widow, Estelle, died in 2008.
